A guide for thoughtful readers

You've been taught what to believe.
Nobody taught you how to read.

Most Christians care deeply about Scripture. Very few were ever shown how it actually works. When Scripture Speaks changes that.

A common tension

You were taught what to believe. But somewhere along the way, no one quite explained how to read the Bible itself.

Familiar passages can feel flat. Difficult ones feel confusing or impossible. The Bible, meant to be a living word, sometimes feels distant or contradictory.

You are not alone in this. And the struggle does not mean your faith is weak.

It means you care enough to want more than surface-level reading. That kind of care is worth honoring.

What this book actually does

This book teaches you how Scripture communicates meaning. Not rules to memorize, but rhythms to recognize.

You will learn to notice genre, context, audience, and purpose. These are not abstract ideas. They are features already built into the text, shaping how meaning is communicated.

The approach here slows your reading without making it tedious. It respects both the divine and human nature of Scripture. It trusts the text to do its own work.

You will not finish this book with all the answers. But you will read Scripture with more clarity and less anxiety.

What's inside

Part 1 — Learning to Listen Well

Four chapters that slow down the moment before reading begins. What is the Bible, really? How does ancient context shape the way it speaks? What role does the reader play? These chapters reshape assumptions before introducing any technique.

Part 2 — Letting the Text Lead

Five chapters on how to actually read. Genre, observation, a slow walk through a passage, sustainable reading rhythms, and why letting theology come second leads to stronger theology. Practice, not theory.

A Gentle Reading Flow

A simple set of orienting questions to return to whenever a passage feels confusing or flat. Not a checklist. A way of slowing down before moving forward.

A Guide to the Genres of Scripture

Narrative, parable, law, wisdom, poetry, prophecy, letters, apocalyptic. Each genre explained plainly — what it's doing, how it speaks, what to watch for, and common mistakes to avoid.

A Contextual Timeline of the Biblical World

From the Patriarchal period through the early church, with the political and cultural pressures shaping each era. Grounds the biblical story in real history without overwhelming the reader.

Language, Translation, and Word Study

A plain-language guide to why translation matters, how to read across versions, and how to approach word studies without misleading yourself. Includes recommended tools.

What this book helps you unlearn

Before learning new habits, sometimes we need to gently set aside old ones.

These patterns are common, understandable, and often learned with good intentions.

About the author

Jan Dogterom is a Bible teacher with experience in both church ministry and Christian secondary education. Over the years, he has worked with students and church members who care deeply about Scripture yet often feel unsure how to read it with clarity and confidence. That experience led him to pursue deeper study.

He earned a Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University and a Master's degree in Bible Exposition from Biola University. His studies challenged him to examine his own assumptions and think carefully about how Scripture was written and first understood.

Jan remains committed to helping others grow in their understanding of the Bible while continuing to grow in his own. He believes careful reading is a lifelong pursuit, not a finished achievement. Deeper Ground is built on that conviction.
